A Symbol survey

I came across this survey which was being done by the Economic Times to be submitted to the Ministry of Finance. The ministry wants a suggestion for an universal Rupee symbol, as $ represents USD.

What should INR be represented by? In fact I thought for a while, and I feel why not just a plain 'Rs.' as it has been for ages. Or has it nor been the norm?

  2. USD is $ so Rs has to have a symbol, right?

  3. yeah, i read about it too. the challenge is, as sawan n biju mentioned, to come up with something that can be easily represented on the keyboard.
Rs is an abbr., but we do not have a symbol.

its actually also a contest, where a person or agency can sumbit their design or ideas for it!

  4. I am not too sure whether we need a symbol always. Why not keep it as 'Rs'

There are many countries, who do not have a symbol. And they also print the abbreviation only on official documents.

Eg: Price for a dozen eggs can be 25.00

Why does it need to have a symbol? Its understood right? And where its required why not just plain 'Rs'
